Published by Parco in 1978, Harumi Gals is a seminal visual document of Japanese graphic design and fashion imagery at the turn of the late 1970s. The book brings together nearly one hundred provocative, playful, and highly stylized works by Harumi Yamaguchi, whose imagery became inseparable from Parco’s radical brand identity.

The project was developed in close collaboration with creative director Kazuko Koike and legendary art director Eiko Ishioka, and supervised by Tadanori Yokoo, one of the most influential figures in postwar Japanese graphic design. The publication also includes a photographic parody by Hajime Sawatari and texts by an exceptional group of writers and designers including Junnosuke Yoshiyuki, Makoto Wada, Ikko Tanaka, Shinichi Kusamori, Ryuichi Yamashiro, Kouhei Tsuka, and Sakumi Hagiwara.

Printed as an oversized softcover with bold pictorial covers, Harumi Gals is both a design manifesto and a time capsule of Tokyo’s experimental commercial art scene. Copies retaining the original large yellow obi band are increasingly scarce and highly sought after by collectors of Japanese graphic design, fashion imagery, and Parco ephemera.
